Synopsis of ISO 14001
ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for an environmental management
system (EMS). The requirements of the ISO 14001 standard are found
in clause 4, and are comprised of six sub-clauses.
While the ISO 14001 standard can be implemented
as an independent Environmental Management System (EMS), many companies
will incorporate these requirements into, and as a part of, their
Quality Management System (QMS) under such standards as: ISO 9001-2000,
ISO/TS 16949, AS 9100, or others.
Compatibility between the two standards is shown
in Annex B of the ISO 14001 standard, and in the recent release
of the combined ISO 19011 standard for auditing of Quality and/or
Environmental Management Systems (this replaces the previous ISO
10011 for Quality and ISO 14011 for Environmental).
Combination of the two types of management systems
is easily done based on the alignment of requirements in the ISO
9000 based QMS with the 14001 EMS. Incorporation of the 14001 requirements
requires only slight modifications to the QMS. The QMS will require
only a few additional requirements from ISO 14001 that are not covered
by the ISO 9000 based systems. These additional requirements fall
in the following areas:
