Pulling It All Together

The current climate surrounding ISO related QMS/EMS
development is causing a stir and many businesses to seek new solutions.
AccessQMS associates have collectively spoken to thousands of industry
professionals serving in different capacities for various companies
nationwide. Overall, our research indicates that a common element of
tension exists between those within administration and quality personnel.
Regarding ISO and system development, there seems to be two different
perspectives on why and how to approach this challenge.
Here are some examples from conversations
that demonstrate these findings:
Administrative Decision Makers:
"Right now, with our current production and workload, it's
too expensive and takes too much time and effort to implement
effectively. Maybe down the road. I believe we have until the
end of 2006 before it becomes necessary."
"If our customers haven't required it, then we don't need
it yet. When they put on the pressure, that's when we'll make
a move."
"Currently our customers are forcing the issue,
so system development has now become a priority. We've decided to
have our quality people do it. After all, that's why we hired them."
Quality Personnel:

"Administration doesn't quite thoroughly understand the
value and impact of developing a good streamlined QMS, especially
to the bottom line. They tend to think of it as too expensive,
and a sort of preferential option for our quality department to
flex their muscles."
"As the QM, I'm held accountable for every issue concerning
customer satisfaction. I am constantly putting out fires and dealing
with customer issues. Sure, a proper system will enable our competitive
advantage, but tell me, when will I have time to build it?"
"Administration refuses
to recognize that it's not that I'm trying to shirk the responsibility
of developing a good system. It's just that maintaining quality
on a day-to-day basis, takes up the majority of my time. To find
a reliable outsource for development makes goods sense. Especially,
when there's a go to guy that we can rely on and I can hold accountable."
